Refugees Get Full Access to U.S. Welfare Programs, Expert Says

One out of five legal immigrants in this country in recent years has come here as a client of the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement — and they arrive with instant access to all welfare programs the United States has to offer.

This, according to Don Barnett,  a fellow with the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Immigration Studies and a resident of Williamson County.

Barnett spoke in Lebanon Monday as part of  The Tennessee Star Wilson County Town Hall on Refugee Resettlement at the Lebanon D.T. McCall and Sons’ location.

Barnett delivered an extensive and detailed presentation on the history and costs of the Refugee Admissions Program, which began 40 years ago with the passage of the Refugee Act of 1980.

More than 3 million refugees have been legally resettled in the United States under that program over four decades, Barnett said.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services.

“In 2016 we had 212,000 individuals with instant access to the welfare system,” Barnett told audience members.

In 2016, 85,000 of those 212,000 entered through the federal Refugee Admissions Program, while the remainder came through other programs.

“In addition, there’s another category called unaccompanied children, and in 2016 we had nearly 60,000 of those. They also come in fully entitled with rights and entitlements to various programs.”

Barnett went on to say that those admitted to the United States under the Refugee Admissions Program must prove they are fleeing persecution on account of religion, nationality, race, social group, or political group.

“It is very easy to take in a social group. When I was working in the state department we would check the refugees coming from the Soviet Union, and they would say they were evangelical Christians or Soviet Jews or something like that. Anyone can say that. They would be asked to quote lines from the Bible to prove they really were an evangelical,” Barnett said.

“We had such an influx of criminals that they actually had at their desk side a book of tattoos because some of the tattoos were gang tattoos. Entire gangs moved in on this refugee program, by the way. Some of the gangs were so bad they said they saw the tattoo and would not take them in even if they claimed they converted to Christianity last week. That’s how chaotic it really was. It’s an open invitation.”

In September, U.S. Republican President Donald Trump issued an executive order that enabled state and local governments to refuse resettling any more refugees in their states or localities.

Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee, as reported, wants to continue resettling refugees throughout Tennessee.

Lee cited his Christian faith as one of his reasons for taking in more refugees.

  1. My Senator And Representative agree that we don’t want and cannot tolerate cannot afford any more “Refugees” but the protest by some counties and Legislators is just that and are still coming, until and unless the Legislation to reign in Soros’s Governor Lee.We cannot afford full Property Tax Relief for Disable Veteran but we can afford more “Refugees” fuel tax cuts fo rFed Ex only, and designating part of our fuel and sales taxes for Sports Stadiums for Billionaire owned teams?????.

Bill Lee please do not use the religious card as the excuse to open the gates to refugees in TN we’ve already taken in our share. As shown in the article its the people who pay taxes who are supporting the refugees and illegals. Listen to the people that are speaking to you from all over the state. The Tax Policy Center has updated its estimate of the percentage of Americans who pay no federal individual income taxes. And the number is: 44 percent in 2018. The financial burden is on hard working people. Could it be that this is part of the agenda to break the economic back bone of our state? Our Governor would be wise to listen to his constituents who worked so hard to put him in that seat of Governor.

    1. I voted for Gov Lee because someone I trust in the Legislature. he made promise or led us to believe he would follow through with his ten points including Constitutional Carry.
he pulled a Bill Haslam/Mchael Bloomberg with his now State Safety Director’s influence,
he lost that list when he got elected.! Our Rights are not our Rights only what he and Michael Bloomberg feel we can have.
He lied, is the truth, to get elected! That is not Christian. Being a Christian is and his promises to restore our Second Amendment Rights got him elected. We got suckered.
Taking dangerous Refugees that Australia even rejected is not Christian any more than letting in any other Huns and Visigoth anti Americans.. We provide for them but not Tennesseans in Washington and Nashville.
